Diffusion tensor imaging tractography of the corticosomatosensory pathway in painless diabetic neuropathy

چکیده
Introduction Diffusion Tensor magnetic resonance imaging (DTI-MRI) is a non-invasive imaging technique that can be used to measure the anisotropy in parenchymal water diffusion in-vivo. This information can be used to reconstruct models of the complex white matter tracts (fiber tractography) in the CNS which may then be used to detect differences between subject groups. Recent imaging studies 2 have indicated spinal and intracranial involvement in subjects with ‘peripheral’ diabetic neuropathy (DN) in addition to the well-documented peripheral nerve and vascular abnormalities. DT-MRI tractography studies can help us understand the changes that may be taking place in the spinal-corticosomatosensory pathways in subjects with DN. In this study we make a quantitative comparison between the fiber tractography results for the corticosomatosensory pathways in a healthy subject group and a DN group.

Background Corpus callosum is the largest commissure in human brain. It consists of tightly packed white matter tracts connecting the two cerebral hemispheres. In this study we aimed to evaluate role of fiber tractography (FT), and diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) in ped...
متن کاملThe Benefits and implementations of Diffusion tensor imaging and Neural Fiber Tractography in Brain Surgery
Background and Aim: The methods for detecting brain activation with fMRI, MRI provides a way to measure the anatomical connections which enable lightning-fast communication among neurons that specialize in different kinds of brain functions. Diffusion tensor imaging is able to measure the direction of bundles of the axonal fibers which are all aligned. Besides mapping white matter fiber tracts,...
متن کاملDT-MRI Tractography and its Application in Cognitive Neuroscience
Recent advancement of MRI techniques and development of new methods of image analysis have allowed us to study large neural tracts within the human brain. This is based on the principle of diffusion tensor MRI that is similar to that of diffusion-weighted imaging but takes magnitude and direction of the diffusion of water into account. Using this technique we have been able to define large neur...

متن کاملCorticospinal tract degeneration in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis: a diffusion tensor imaging and fibre tractography study.
INTRODUCTION Motor neuron damage and cortical spinal tract (CST) degeneration in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) are difficult to visualise and quantify on conventional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). CLINICAL PICTURE We studied 8 ALS patients and 12 normal volunteers using diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) and fibre tractography using fibre assignment by continuous tracking (FACT) to stud...
